Giants --- Some observations from the first few games
Aoki --- Off to a very hot start. Loves to swing the bat won't get many walks.
Bochy is a players manager --- This was proven again on Tuesday when Vogelsong had thrown nearly 100 pitches by the fifth inning of a tie game. K & K commented on television that he had hardly anything left. There were two runners on base with two out. Bochy decided to leave him in so if the Giants happen to score in the top of the 6th inning and keep the lead Vogelsong would be the winning pitcher. Unfortunately Vogy gave up a three run homer that costs the Giants the game. Bochy loves to give his players the opportunity to succeed which makes him very popular with them even if it sometimes costs a game.
It's no surprise to me that Cain is on the DL because there were many warning signs during the spring. It only can be a shock to the Giants if they really believed all those positive reports about his progress. Do they really believe he will back in three weeks?
I am very surprised however that Belt is now injured after only one complete game because last year he had such hard luck while missing over half the season. I just wonder if his "no Bull" diet we wrote about previously had anything to do with him straining his groin. Those 'healthy' diets can be 'full of bull'.
Peavy is most likely next for the DL. He has a dead arm and now he has a bad back that perhaps could be career ending. He is scheduled for Sunday. Did he get a shot? Could be a long day for the Giants.
Are the Giants sure they can't use Zito?
Don't worry! They just brought back Kevin Correia
Pagan has impressed me along with others with his play in the first three games. He seems very loose and relaxed and his back doesn't seem to be a problem. I am concerned that is might be the results of a shot he got recently that is allowing him to play so well. What happens when the shot wears off? I assume get another but there is a limit.
Crawford is looking good at the plate.
Remember at the start of spring training the Giants were boasting that they had seven starting pitchers. That one was hard to figure since they ended last season with only one. By the third game they already have had to call up a starter Heston from Sacramento. Congratulations on a great performance.
Giant fans were happy with the win Wednesday but there has to be some concerns. Twice they could not get a runner in from third with one out. Pagan made an out with the bases loaded and McGehee struck out with two on. They got 14 hits which helps the batting average but only 3 runs until a home run by McGehee in the 9th inning put the game away.
Glad to see the Giants give Duffy a chance. Don't understand why he bunted in the first inning. In fact I don't understand why Hale the DBacks manager bunted with his team trailing by a run late in the game. Chase Field is a hitters dream. Playing for one run doesn't do it.
The pre and post game shows has been featuring the Giants very popular and retired third base coach Flannery. What a encyclopedia of information he has on the Giant players. Very interesting and he adds a lot to the show. The show rotates former players during the year so I am not sure how many times he will be on during the season. For example on Crawford he said, he is the teams best base runner but they need to rest him during the season. When he gets tired he doesn't hold his hands correctly at the plate which in turn has been the cause of his slumps in the past.
On to San Diego!
